When officials from more than 200 countries and hundreds of journalists arrive in Azerbaijan in November for the U.N.'s annual climate conference, they’ll bring a level of scrutiny the hosts aren’t accustomed to — and don't often tolerate.

The 2024 summit in Azerbaijan comes amid fresh reports showing that global warming levels are accelerating, bringing more intense climate-related disasters and an increased demand for funding to mitigate and protect communities from the effects of climate change.

A focus of this year's annual climate event will be striking a new deal onpossibly worth trillions—helping poor countries in the green transition.
